Marc Belderbos knows,
apart from memory,
that architecture is 'a trace where a primary effect of law can be read’
or 'a trace where an effect of language is read'.
Like writing!
The words of his hand are not 'elsewhere'.
Like architecture, they are primary.
Or at least they are the ones that are there,
in the commencement,
where architecture is,
that Marc Belderbos tries to hold and maintain.
Marc Belderbos has been writing since he started drawing architecture.
And his drawings, like his writing, are uncertain.
Precise but uncertain.
They are of the order of the interrogative statement.
All of them!
These drawings as well as these words.
It is a question of founding architecture.
And architecture is the ‘background’
(cf. Jean Stillemans, La figure du fond, Lelaa.be).
So how do we go about it?
In fact, Marc Belderbos
does not 'know' what he is writing.
It is more a question of,
-once a serious knowledge has been built up-,
to establish a stay,
stretched out among the words,
by the idea.
This stay among words
is held in the enunciation…
leading, here and there, to statements.
This stay by enunciation seeks,
goes up to the bottom of the mind,
and places itself at its edges
where are revealed, according to what can,
and are welcomed
the inaugural events,
-rare statements cutting through the Real-
that increase knowledge
or which increase, here, the knowledge of the genius of architecting.
All this finally leads to the confidence that
architecture is ‘a sector of knowledge’.
Specific knowledge
of the inaugural holding or stance
in the Real
of the subject.

- Enunciation of anguish and innocence, 1978.
(Énonciation d’angoisse et d’innocence)
Work accompanying a final study project.
writing that does not find

there is anguish and innocence is needed
- The reason for the augury, 1992
(La raison de l’augure)
Doctoral thesis.
A long founding text,
an introduction to
the laws of aggregation of the form of architecture
through three essays on the commencement.
1 Resonance of reason or the stripping of the beginning;
2 Stances at a distance or the setting up of the beginning;
3 The unfolding of the beginning or history in permanent beginning.
This text was hailed by the philosopher Alain Badiou as
'the first to have established in thought, the genius of architecture'
and Jean Ladrière sees in it
a true philosophy of architecture, self-consistent, which really advances thought.
This book is now fully revisited and will be published in autumn 2022
